Challenges
Initial paywall limiting the number of channels didn't hold up for Android users, even though iOS users were more tolerant of it, threatening adoption on one platform
"Chat-style notes" is an original note-taking pattern, therefore not an established category, so there was no existing mental model to lean on; the challenge was getting people to recognize a behavior they already had (using chat apps to take notes) rather than explaining a new concept from scratch
A long backlog of feature ideas created pressure to feature-load the app, at odds with the product's core value of frictionless capture
Key Decisions
Removed the channel-limit paywall entirely and made the core app fully free, based on Android usage data showing the paywall was suppressing adoption there
Revised monetization strategy with an optional paid sync service (code-ready, not released yet) instead of a feature-gated free tier, monetizing a genuinely new capability rather than restricting the existing product
Developed companion web/desktop app (in progress) to create need for sync service
Used alpha/beta feedback from early users to prioritize which features shipped, rather than building out the full backlog, keeping the app aligned with its frictionless-capture premise
Impact
Shipped 19 releases in 2 months, incorporating feedback from 20+ alpha/beta users into onboarding, feature prioritization, and the local-first storage architecture
5-star rating on both the App Store and Google Play
App soft-launched and ready for growth phase, already gaining several hundred early adopters acquired through pure organic growth, no marketing spend
